Chapter Six

By the time he returned from the shelter, Aubrey had the dish made and had taken to pacing as she waited for Seth to try it.

Josh came over. “That smells fantastic. I didn’t want to disturb you while you were cooking since you looked like you were focused.”

“It’s Brie stuffed with macaroni with red pepper jelly sauce on top.”

Aubrey blushed again, and Seth filed these reactions from today in his memory bank to give her shit about later.

Seth grabbed three spoons. “Let’s dig in and see how it is.”

Taking a generous amount, he blew on it to cool it before putting it in his mouth. “Oh wow, that’s good.” He wiped at his chin with a paper towel he grabbed from the rack. “A little gooey, but that’s okay.”

“You really like it?”

“I do. Josh?”

“I think it’s fucking awesome. Did you make this up?”

“Um, yeah. I actually had a dream about it. When I woke up this morning, I started thinking about how I could do it and make sure the macaroni got cooked and the Brie melted enough.”

“And how did you accomplish this feat?” Seth asked, taking another spoonful.

Josh had it right. The dish tasted incredible.

“I used elbow macaroni because I thought they might hold up better to the Brie, plus I know we always have it on hand, and it’s small so it takes less time to cook.”

Seth nodded, and she continued to speak, her smile still growing wider. “I boiled it for about half the time you’re supposed to, then turned the Brie upside down, cut it open, stuffed it, and put the whole thing in the oven at three-fifty for about ten minutes.”

She glanced at Seth. “That’s too long to make a customer wait, though, isn’t it? I mean, if you ever considered it for the truck.”

“Not if that’s noted on the menu. I do have one question, though. What do you plan to serve this in? Would you bake it and then try to transfer it into one of our standard serving pieces? I could be wrong, but I doubt it would look real pretty if you did that since they’re rectangular.”

“Ugh, I hadn’t thought of that.” Aubrey bit her lip. “The Brie would only be seven or eight ounces…”

“Wait,” Josh said. “Hang on.”

He flew out of the kitchen entirely, and Seth and Aubrey glanced at each other, both raising their eyebrows at Josh’s sudden disappearance. When he returned, he had a food supply catalog with him.

“I saw these little circular bakeable containers. They’d be perfect. Shit, it might take me a little while to find them again, and I need to finish my stuff here.”

Seth nodded. “If you can wait ’til you’re done, then I’d love to see what you guys come up with. I’m not opposed to buying some things to make your ideas work, as long as the costs are reasonable. And, yes, if you can find a way to do this, I’ll put it on the menu as a specialty item. How does the Ms.
